Are you considering booking a hotel on the Athens Riviera for your trip to Athens? Well, let’s kick off by saying that’s a great idea right from the bat. The Athenian Riviera is an excellent summertime destination that combines beachfront accommodation, impeccable natural beauty, and exceptional opportunities for sightseeing off the beaten track.

But here’s the catch: the famous coastline is much longer than you’d think and choosing the right hotel for your vacation can be quite overwhelming.

In this article, we’ll list a few reasons why you should book a hotel on the Athens Riviera and present a handpicked selection of hotels in each of its most popular spots along with some information on what you can expect to find in each area so that you can pick the one that suits your tastes best.

Should You Book a Hotel on the Athenian Riviera for Your Trip to Athens?

We often hear first-time visitors to Athens being troubled about whether or not they should stay at the Athenian Riviera for their trip.

The reason behind these concerns is a common misconception: that staying along the coast and being able to visit the historic center of Athens are mutually exclusive. This isn’t entirely true.

The Athens Riviera spans numerous kilometers along the coasts of Attica, starting from the famous Floisvos Marina in Palaio Faliro, which is only a few minutes away from the city center of Athens and ending at Cape Sounion on the southernmost point of the peninsula.

Thus, it all depends on what you’re looking for. If you don’t mind passing up on hotels in the most popular areas of Athens in favor of staying at a hotel by the sea but still want to roam the city, one of the northern parts of the Athenian Riviera would suit you best.

On the other hand, if you want to completely escape the hustle and bustle of the city center and enjoy a real beach vacation, head further south for a sight that you wouldn’t expect to find that close to the capital.

Below you’ll find a list of the most popular places on the Athenian Riviera (from north to south) that should be on your radar when choosing your hotel.

  • Palaio Faliro and Floisvos Marina
  • Glyfada
  • Vouliagmeni and Varkiza
  • Cape Sounion

What’s next? A breakdown of each of these areas, a few pointers on things to see and do there, and a selection of hotels on the Athenian Riviera to suit all styles and budgets.

Getting From the Athens Riviera to Athens City Center

As mentioned above, the Athenian Riviera spans quite a larger area than most travelers think. Hence, getting from and to the Athens city center can be a bit of a challenge.

Unless you choose a hotel close to Palaio Faliro and the Floisvos Marina (in which case you can hop on the tram to get to the city center), we strongly recommend renting a car so that you’ll be able to visit the city and explore the sunny coastline with comfort and ease.

Keep in mind though that, during summertime, Vouliagmenis avenue -the road that leads from Vouliagmeni to the center of Athens- tends to be traffic-heavy.

We suggest driving up to Elliniko and getting on the metro (red line) to get to the city. The ride to Syntagma station takes approximately 20 minutes.

To conclude, booking a hotel on the Athens Riviera is an excellent choice for escaping the city and relaxing by the sea and combining an exciting seaside holiday with traditional urban sightseeing.

You have to book the right hotel for your needs.

Just read through our guide, pick the one that best suits your tastes and get ready for an unforgettable stay along the Athenian Riviera.
